Description

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting casserole with savory beef patties, creamy gravy, tender potatoes, and melted cheddar cheese. This hearty one-dish meal is perfect for family dinners and brings the flavors of classic Amish cooking to your table.

Ingredients

For the beef patties:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 cups milk, divided
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

For the casserole:

  • 4-5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 6 patties.
  3. Brown the patties in a skillet on both sides, but don’t cook through. Set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, whisk 1 cup of milk and flour until smooth. Slowly whisk in the remaining milk and bring to a simmer to form gravy. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Layer half the potato slices in the bottom of the baking dish. Top with half the onion slices.
  6. Place the browned patties over the onions.
  7. Layer the remaining potatoes and onions on top of the patties.
  8. Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the layers.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  10. Remove foil, top with shredded cheese, and bake uncovered for 15 more minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can add peas, carrots, or other vegetables to enhance the flavor and nutrition.
  • Experiment with different cheese varieties like Monterey Jack or sharp cheddar for a flavor twist.
  • Substitute russet potatoes with sweet potatoes for a different flavor profile.
  • If using frozen hash browns, it’s a quicker alternative, but fresh potatoes give a better texture.
